Mothers’ Union was founded 130 years ago in 1876 by Mary Sumner when she called a gathering of mothers in her parish to learn about Christian motherhood, we now have 3.6 million members working in 76 countries passionate about caring for families around the world.
Our work is threefold:-
1) A diverse range of MU projects meeting the needs of individuals and families everyday.
2) Our policy work challenges root causes of injustice.
3) All of our work is underpinned by our Christian faith.
Examples:- Sustainable self-help projects.
Literacy and development programmes in Malawi, Sudan and Burundi, skills in health,
Hygiene, HIV/AIDS and poverty alleviation.
St.Barnabas’ Branch.
Our own branch of Mothers’ Union started in 1911, the first branch leader being a lady called Mrs Adamson. There have been many changes during these years but our aims remain the same. The advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life:-
To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding.
To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
To maintain a world-wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
To help those whose family life has met with adversity.
We are an outgoing branch growing in numbers, two new members joining us very recently.
The branch meets on the third Monday of each month in the Church Hall at 7.30pm. Our programme this year is varied and includes speakers, demonstrations and visits. We welcome new members, young, older, married or single.
We are currently running a "drop in" each Wednesday between 9-11am. in the Church Hall for tea, coffee and companionship. A warm welcome is extended to everyone.
The committee and members are looking forward to new ideas and challenges in the coming year.
