Mothers' Union

Mothers’ Union was formed by Mary Sumner in 1896 and at the present time there are 4 million members in 81 countries.

Here at St. Barnabas’ in the parish of Burnmoor, we have a very active branch with a membership of twenty plus one indoor member. Our meetings are held in the church hall on the third Monday of the month. During the winter months the meetings commence at 2pm. and during the summer months at 7.30pm.

Membership of the Mothers’ Union is open to anyone who has been baptised in the Holy Trinity and who declares their support for the aims and objectives of the society. Male or female married or single we welcome everyone.

The meetings begin with a short service including hymns, prayers and reflections followed by various speakers and demonstrators. We meet for summer outings and festive meals. We join other Deanery branches at various times throughout the year for special  services and events.

Mothers’ Union members assist the clergy in baptism preparations and attend baptism services and are welcoming and familiar faces at the services.

We help to run the weekly Village Coffee Morning and have a rota of members who support the popular weekly Toddler Group. We also support the youth leader with prayer and practical support. The yearly creativity day for the children of the parish is very well attended and MU members provide a very welcome tuck shop serving food and drinks throughout the day. We also provide lunches at our church summer fete and Christmas fair. We hold fund raising events the proceeds of which are sent overseas.

Our Mothers’ Union aim here in Burnmoor is to support the family within our community with prayer, love and practical support whilst nurturing our bonds with overseas branches.
